A Leader in Human Rights Law

Women in government are often regarded as "leaders" by virtue of their position. But one of the most important roles of women in government is that of defender of human rights and advancement of women's rights. It is no wonder that when President Obama created the White House Council on Women in Government, it was an important initiative on the road to gender equality in government. The first council was established over 20 years ago and has achieved much development in fulfilling its purpose. However, it still has a long way to go to fully establish a truly equal footing in government between men and women.

At the current time, there are still so many limitations and gaps between women and men in education, career, family life and political participation. It is very sad to see that the situation for women in society has not improved much despite all the accomplishments made in the realm of women's empowerment in the past. If a woman wants to progress, she should be ready to dedicate herself to learning about the different human rights laws that protect women's rights around the world. A woman should take this responsibility seriously because it will determine her future not only in her personal life but also in her participation in public life. If a woman wants to be a leader in human rights law, she should know how to read human rights texts and study their legal framework.

It is a good thing that there are organizations and groups around the world that provide assistance to women on how to empower themselves. They train women on how to handle issues that face them in their everyday lives such as equal opportunity in education, careers and family life. These women-based groups and projects are run by volunteer women with expertise on human rights law. These groups help women realize their potentials and learn how to move forward in building a better future for them.

Women's rights are not restricted or defined according to gender alone. Other categories of people who are deprived of their rights include children, mentally challenged people and the elderly. Everyone is entitled to equal rights and freedom. All human rights law guarantees the right to live with dignity and safety and these are guaranteed by the state.

Women's empowerment is not just about making women successful in every sphere of life but to contribute equally to the economic growth of the nation. A woman's position is just as valuable as any man's in the society and this holds true for the promotion of human rights law as well. A woman's empowerment does not end at getting an education and finding a good job. A woman should have the right to stay at home and care for her family if she chooses to do so. A mother should be able to take care of her kids without having to work or earn.

The world should see the value of a woman's personal choices in life and her ability to decide what is best for her family. She should be respected as a person and as a partner in any partnership. A mother should have the same rights as any other member of her family. Fighting for these rights ensures that women will have full access to every aspect of life, be it political, social, economic or reproductive.
