Defamation and Cyber Bullying

There are a few different distinctions that can be made when discussing the issues of defamation and cyber bullying. These distinctions usually center around the place of the victim, their status in society, the emotional state of the victim, and the manner in which the statements were made. The first distinction is a gender one. This is related to the status of the target of the bullying. For instance, if there is an online game in which a boy repeatedly bullies a girl, then the boy is obviously a bully and has definitely crossed the line. Likewise, if a girl is being bullied by a boy who repeatedly calls her derogatory names, she has clearly crossed the line and is obviously a victim.

Then, there is the emotional/psychological level of the victim. This is an area of cyber bullying that many people are not familiar with, but there is a clear correlation between a victim's degree of emotional pain and the type of language that they are subjected to. If the victim is in constant pain, the bully is hurting her and likely doing so through words that are harmful and therefore deserving of some sort of reaction from the victim.

Finally, there is the monetary level of the victim. This looks closely related to the emotional pain of the victim and again, there is a strong correlation here. The more upset a victim gets, the more she tends to want to avoid social interactions. This leads to cyber bullying. If a minor wins a contest to the extent that it will leave her with scars that she won't be able to cover with clothing for the rest of her life, then she is in serious financial trouble and likely has been cyber bullying her for a long time. It is only natural that she will not want to subject her children to this type of environment.

As you can see, cyber bullying is something that needs to be addressed with everyone involved. Parents need to get involved because this is often an ongoing situation. It is hard enough for parents to watch their own child being bullied by another, let alone have to put up with cyber bullying as well. It is imperative that you take action today by telling your child not to participate in any situation that will result in them being cyberbullied.

Let them know that there is help out there and that there is help available. Talk to your child and let them know that you will stand with them no matter what. There are very serious consequences to cyber bullying and those who continue to participate need to realize what the consequences are going to be.
