If you have children, you've probably encountered divorce and parenting issues. It's an emotional process that can leave you confused and distressed, as well as making you realize how much effort you put into your own parenting and how much you loved them. You may wonder how to handle it as a parent and what the effects might be on your kids. Here are some tips to help you deal with it in a healthy way.
According to many researchers, one of the most common effects of divorce is a shift in behaviors. Children who have experienced a separation from their parents often develop new, and at times strange, behaviors, such as staying away from extended family members and trying to avoid their parents altogether. As a parent, you can try to understand what might have caused this development and then try to modify your behavior patterns so that they don't cause problems in the future. For example, you could make a concerted effort to spend more time with your kids after the separation and to spend quality time with them as frequently as possible.

In addition to the possibility of new behaviors being developed, it's also possible for children to begin to withdraw from you as a parent. This can leave you feeling lonely and frustrated, leading you to react negatively. The goal here is not to react as a single parent but to make yourself feel as comfortable as possible with the situation. Don't yell and scream at your ex-spouse, get angry, or use anger as a means to take control; these things only make your kids feel more rejected and they will, in turn, withdraw even further from you.
To help you through this time, start by talking with your child, preferably by using an open and honest approach that does not involve accusations or blame-motivation. Explain to your little guy or girl that there were a lot of problems that contributed to their parents getting divorced, and that none of those issues can be blamed on them. Let them know that you acknowledge their pain, but that you would like to help them work out their problems so they do not hurt themselves or others again. These conversations may seem a little bit uncomfortable at first, but many couples have said that talking through the issues associated with the divorce is one of the most healing experiences that they've had, and a few divorce counselors agree.

If counseling doesn't work or seems too daunting, many parents turn to AA meetings, professional organizations like Parent's Toolshop, and local support groups. One thing you can try is asking a trusted friend or family member to be your co-worker during this time. You'll probably be surprised at the support that you get! If nothing else works, seek out a referral from the American Bar Association or the American Psychological Association. If either of these sources can point you in the right direction, your divorce and parenting issues will be well on their way to being resolved.
In the end, if both you and your ex-spouse can come together and decide what type of parent you want to be, and if your parenting plan works, you will find that your separation won't be nearly as painful as you thought it would be. You will likely find that the trust between you and your child has been reawakened, and you will feel inspired to do whatever you can to improve the relationship between you and your other parent. You and your ex-spouse may have to start being more open and honest with each other, and you might have to begin practicing some conflict resolution skills. But most importantly, you will have to put this issue behind you and be living your life as a happy co-parent! The most important thing is that you and your other parent are motivated by what you want for your kids, rather than by what you think they want for themselves!
