Forensic science, also called forensic chemistry, is the application of chemistry to forensic and criminal laws, primarily during criminal investigation, as dictated by the legal requirements of admissible evidence and procedure within the jurisdiction. For those who are unaware, forensic evidences are that which has been derived from a crime scene or victim, or a dead body. Such evidence may be collected from hair, clothing, blood, saliva, etc... These types of forensic evidences are then processed by forensic scientists to determine the actual source of these materials at the scene of the crime, wherefore they may be classified as being "real" forensic evidence or "fabricated." While forensic science is not an exact science, there have been great advancements in the scientific community over the past 100+ years since the first forensics laboratory opened its doors. Thanks to the advancements in technology and diagnostic tools, forensic experts today can accurately identify a variety of different physical characteristics of a victim, including: age, gender, race, height, weight, complexion, and hair/facial composition. This same quality allows forensic experts to match known and unknown biological samples to identify unknown sources of DNA.
