It is not uncommon to hear about drone inspections on major projects that range from bridges, power lines and dams to major airports, railways and ports. In fact, a growing list of industries are now incorporating these types of aerial vehicles into their daily operations.
For example, a major electrical power line project recently saw the removal of over seven hundred miles of power lines without the use of any aerial vehicles. This is primarily due to the visual inspection, which found a high number of damaged or unstable towers. Aerial pictures also revealed that a number of the towers were in need of immediate repairs or replacement. The inspectors found that one of the towers had actually broken off from its support system, while a further two needed extensive maintenance. This suggests that drones can be used to aid in the detection and resolution of tower issues which would otherwise result in significant disruption to the ongoing operation. Other examples of drone inspection services focusing in on power lines include those inspecting various major transmission towers in the United States.

Drones are now commonly used by aerial technicians to inspect airports. During these inspections, high resolution cameras on board can detect any potential problems with the security of a particular airport. The equipment allows for the inspection to take place at any time, which enables long delays in reaching a conclusion. Drone visual inspection is especially useful when a drone is sent to check the integrity of an individual airfield. Aerial vehicles are also now regularly used by emergency medical services to assess potential disasters. During such assessments, critical conditions that could be life threatening are identified and repaired before life is threatened. Drones capable of conducting such visual inspections are now becoming a permanent fixture of such services due to their valuable ability to save lives. The inspection process however remains relatively similar between drones utilised for visual inspections and those used for drone inspection services. Pilots may utilise handheld metal sensors or hand-held optical sensors to locate any potential hazards. Once an area is identified as a potential hazard, the operator will then fly a drone through the area and take visual shots.
Drone inspection services are also proving very useful in the detection and repair of leaks. In fields such as oil and gas, mineral deposits and hydrocarbon pipelines, remote-control vehicles are now commonly being used to detect problematic pipelines. One of the most effective tools available to operators is thermal imaging. Used along with a ground monitoring system, thermal imaging allows for the detection and repair of numerous pipeline leaks.
