The interdisciplinary subject of materials science, more commonly known as metallurgy and thermal engineering, encompasses the discovery and development of new metallic materials, especially solid materials. The principles on which engineers and metallurgists base their construction are applicable to a wide variety of other disciplines, including materials science, but also computer science, thermodynamics and many others. Many modern materials are complex systems that have been developed from simple templates using methods of simple linear equations. In some cases, materials must be manipulated at extremely high temperatures. This makes materials scientists very interested in understanding the behavior of heat as it is conducted through these systems.
Some of the most common types of questions that materials scientists answer are those about the study of heat and its effects on objects. Two broad areas of materials engineering are heat transfer, which seek to understand how the rate of transfer of heat between two locations is controlled; and energy transfer, which look into the mechanics of dissimilar materials in heat transfer. Another important area of materials engineering is the thermomechanics, or the study of heat. Here the focus is on how heat is produced and transferred to specific systems.

Other areas of materials engineering are fatigue analysis, which studies the effect of physical stresses on structures, and creep resistance, which examines the effect of pressure on materials.
